Brazil Facts And Tips From Surfer X
(Monday, April 19, 2010)

Back for a second event, Surfer X gives us the lowdown on tour headed into the Brazil event:

Bells proved once again to be a testing event for both competitors and Fantasy players alike with all the different locations used it proves equally as challenging knowing what board to ride as it is to know who to pick for your team. One thing, however, that is perfectly clear after the Australian leg is that progressive surfing wins and you better build your fantasy teams around the new judging criteria as well.

Another thing that is perfectly clear after the Australian leg is that of the veterans - Kelly, Mick and Taj have made the necessary adjustments to their surfing in order to thrive on the new tour. Those same three surfers have literally dominated in Brazil. Since Fanning joined the tour in 2002 one of the trio has won in Brazil six out of the last eight years. Pretty impressive seeing how that at least one of the trio has missed the event six of those same eight years due to injury or personal reasons.

Locals: Pretty hard to bet against Adriano de Souza in this event and rookie Jadson Andre looked sharp in his first 2 world tour events, his air attack could be lethal in the Brazilian beach break. Keep an eye out for who gets the wild cards as who knows how many Gabriel Medina’s are in Brazil.

X Factor: Andy Irons knocked some of rust off by Bells that he was clearly covered in at Snapper. Like Brad Pitt’s character, Louis, in Interview with the Vampire, AI, tired of feeding on the blood of low seeded rats and he feasted once again on some potent top seeded blood with victories over Dane Reynolds and Kai Otton. Will the taste of star powered plasma turn A.I. back into the impaler he once was? For the price, A.I. is worth putting on your team if he isn’t already, as his cost could skyrocket after J-Bay and Teahupoo.

Bobby Martinez looked and sounded pissed at both Australian events and he came away with two 3rd place finishes. Even though all of Bobby’s wins come in heavy left-handers he is just as strong at beachies and a pissed Martinez is much more dangerous then a disinterested one.

The rookie class made strides at Bells, not so much with big results, but with performances. Pulling big move after big move helped the majority of the rookies hold their own versus the big guns in round three. Many more of them other than Jadson Andre would have pushed into round four as well, if it weren’t for some correctable mistakes. Wilkinson, Simpson, Payne, Wright and the Gudang’s all have a solid beach break act, so look for more progress from the grom squad.

The seeding will be updated for this event to reflect the current ratings so that could have a big impact on your team as well. It always sucks when you have both Jordy and Dane on your team and they face each other in round three.
