Fantasy Surfer Interview With Kekoa Bacalso
(Monday, April 19, 2010)
The men's Brazil event is just a few short days away. Top 45 surfers from around the world are prepping for an event that for the most part has a history of being unpredictable. One year, competitors are grovelling in 2 foot beach break. The next year, they are surfing double overhead point break style waves. What will it be this year? Fantasy Surfer checked in with Kekoa Bacalso to see if he's ready for Brazil:
How do you like the overall contest experience in Brazil (waves, food, beer, etc?)?
Can’t complain. I’ve got some of my better results in Brazil. We stay at this sick little joint with a couple waves out front and no one around. Foods good and I love Bohemia!!! I’ll be drinking a couple of those when I get there. No doubt!!
Have you been training for Brazil and if so, how?
Been surfing every day rain or shine!!! Just a good little time to regroup and set my mind straight and come out guns blazing in Brazil.
Is it ever hard to compete there with the beaches filled with half naked women?
Yeah, when I used go to the WQS's in Pria Mole it was pretty crazy!! But at the spot they have the WCT isn’t the warmest place in the world right now,so everyone is dressed for winter over there.
Do you play Fantasy Surfer?
I sure do and I’ve been f-ing blowing it! You’d think I’d be good but I really suck at that.
Who would you put on your Fantasy team for the Brazil contest?
Adriano [De Souza]
After winning Rookie of the Year in 2009 you seem to be in a bit of a sophomore slump. What’s been the main difference between this year and last year so far for you?
Ah, I think I expected too much out of myself this year. I just have to focus on myself and not the other guy in my heat, because I’ve been nervous as dog shit in heats. The new crew of rookie’s are good - They can throw down at any time at any cost. It’s going to be an interesting couple event coming up because of the cut [from 45 surfers to 32 after Tahiti] Guys are going to be surfing like their lives depend on it - and I’m sure as hell going to be one of those guys! Hahaha, believe that.
Good luck in the event and we look forward to your next post heat interview!
Mahalos!!!!
