Who's In And Out For The 2010 Mid-Year Cutoff After Tahiti

Monday, August 2, 2010
As you may or may not know, after the upcoming 2010 Billabong Pro Tahiti, the ASP World Tour will be reducing the amount of surfers on tour from 45 to 32. Starting at the Hurley Pro at Trestles, there will be a new look to the tour. While this has been in the works for some time, the reality of the impending cutoff looms large over the surfers struggling to stay on tour. Below, Fantasy Surfer breaks down the entire Top 45 and where they stand with the upcoming cutoff. But if you think this year's mid-year change is brutal, wait until the end of the 2010 World Tour when the new One World rankings kick in. That is going to be even more interesting.

Cutoff? What Cutoff?

These surfers are in absolutely no danger of having to worry about the cutoff. These are title contenders - worrying about what the back half of the pack is dealing with is the furthest thing from their minds. These guys are safe.

Almost Safe Enough

These surfers are sitting in a pretty comfortable position for the mid-year cutoff, but they are going to have to post a strong result or two to remain in a safe position for the year-end cutoff.

It Could Go Either Way

This group of surfers is the one that will be the most interesting to watch. Some of them are currently above the cutoff line at the moment and will be looking for one last result at Tahiti to make sure they are safe. Others are just below the line and are going to be pulling out all the stops to stay at the big league level.

Things Aren't Looking So Good

These surfers are going to need a minor miracle to pull out qualifying for Trestles. It isn't out of the realm of possibility, but the odds certainly aren't stacked in their favor.

It's Just Not Gonna Happen

Unfortunately for this group of surfers, the first half of the year just hasn't gone their way. Whether it was unexpected results or simply being over their heads against the talent level on tour, these guys have found themselves in a lame-duck position. This will be their last event on the big stage for a while, as no matter how they do, there's a seriously legitimate chance they are going to be demoted. Polo and Thornton have yet to win a heat all year, while Duru is the designated injury replacement on tour (he replaced Joel Parkinson at J-Bay).
