Dean Morrison Assaulted

Despite Being Assaulted Dean Morrison Will Compete at J-Bay
By Jeff Mull

The Australian website, GoldCoast.com.au, is reporting that Dean Morrison was assaulted early Sunday morning near the Griffith Street Hotel in Coolangatta. As a result of the assault, Morrison was taken to a local hospital and was treated for a broken cheekbone and numerous facial lacerations. He was unavailable to comment to the website that broke the story, but longtime friend and Aussie surfing legend Rabbit Bartholomew had the following to say about the incident:

"He was just sitting down and some guy came along and nailed him in the skull with a bottle...He is extremely lucky that, one, he didn't get killed and, two, he didn't get brain damage..."

The article stated that Morrison did not know the man who hit him, and quoted Bartholomew as saying that the event was a random attack.

"Dean was in the wrong place at the wrong time," he said. "It was random and completely unprovoked. He didn't even see it coming...It was just completely random violence."

The attack on Morrison was the latest act in a string of voilence in the Coolangatta area. "On a Friday and Saturday night, to me it is a no-go zone," Bartholomew told GoldCoast.com. "It's dangerous. It's terrible what has happened to our little surfing town...By night it is a nightmare. There are gangs, there is all kinds of stuff happening down here."

The ASP has also posted a story on their website confirming the incident and stating that Morrison, who is currently ranked 37th, will surf in the upcoming event at J-Bay despite his injuries.
