Fantasy Surfer Interview With Jordy Smith
(Friday, July 9, 2010)

You're currently sitting second on the ASP ratings coming into J-Bay, how are you feeling?

This year I feel a lot more relaxed coming into the J-Bay.

What do you think of the new judging criteria and the one world ranking system?

I think the new judging criteria is developing nicely and is leaning towards rewarding good scores for big moves like power carves, airs and the new creative surfing stuff. As far as the one world ranking system I feel it's going to be a big learning curve for the ASP at this stage before I can make a positive comment. Time will only tell as we experience and move into this system!

If you could win your first event on tour would J-Bay be the spot you’d want to achieve that?

J-Bay would definitely be one of the spots that I would love to win, especially for a first time World Tour event win.

How long have you been going to J-Bay?

For the past 15 years. I was first taken to J-Bay at the age of 7 which was just after my first ever under 10 South Africa champs that was held at Victoria Bay and have being going down every year since then.

What are your favorite conditions for J-Bay (wind, swell direction, tide, etc)?

J-Bay has so many different variables. I have had some amazing days with all the different elements. I like a moderate southwest wind with a pumping 8 feet south swell and surfing between the in-coming tides. A lot of times one can get their best rides when you least expect it. It just has that magic.

You had a pretty epic clash with Dane at J-Bay last year. Is there anyone you’d like to match-up against this year?

Match-ups are like pulling a name out of a hat! There is never any one in particular that I want to surf against at events as any one on tour can turn it on at any given time.

Do you play Fantasy Surfer?

Not really. But I do get involved in all the hype as we are always being told by the big punters how much they won or lost on Fantasy Surfer.

Who would you put on your Fantasy team for the J-Bay contest?

J-Bay is such an open race. I would probably put my money on all the top seeds, although I have seen a few dark horses come away with a win so you can never really count anyone out!

Who are some of the local wild cards Fantasy players should consider for their teams?

The wild cards are always a force that one should take seriously. This year both Shaun Holmes & Ryan Payne I would have to say have as much of the same chance as anyone.

Thanks for the time and good luck bru!
