Fantasy Surfer Interview With Billabong Pro Winner Jordy Smith

Monday, July 26, 2010

With all the chaos that accompanied his first career win, Fantasy Surfer was able to get Jordy on the phone for a few minutes to ask him a few questions:

Fantasy Surfer: Congrats on your win at J-Bay, Hollywood couldn’t have scripted it any better for your first win on the WT and assuming the number one position in the process.

Jordy Smith: Thanks. It was great to win, most importantly to have my family and friends all there to share it with me.

You were number two before J-Bay and said you felt a lot more relaxed coming into the event. Now you leave J-Bay number one, how hard will it be to keep that relaxed feeling heading to Teahupoo?

To be honest I am feeling more relaxed after J-bay then before. I have the same goals throughout the whole year. It's a long way till the end of the year so hopefully I can remain this relaxed.

You mentioned in a recent interview on Stab that you had board issues your first two years on tour. How have you corrected that?

Yeah. Definitely fine-tuned my boards. In the past I've shown up to events with way too many boards and would be riding a new one every surf.

You also mentioned in that Stab interview that you’ve toned done the partying this year yet but you must have raged pretty hard after winning J-Bay. What did you get into?

O'Neill and Red Bull threw me a party in J-bay. We had it at a restaurant and invited everyone, such a good night.

We understand that the media demands have been pretty intense since winning the comp. What has been some of the demands outside of the usual surf media?

Lots of newspaper stuff. I did a morning show on the radio.

How do you think the impending mid-year cutoff will affects guys approach at Teahupoo?

I think it is going to help as you are going to see guys go all out.

Thanks for the time and good luck during the rest of the year!

Thanks see you in Tahiti.
