Bells Facts And Tips From Surfer X
(Thursday, March 25, 2010)

Starting here at the 2010 Rip Curl Pro Bells Beach, Fantasy Surfer introduces a new feature - 'Facts And Tips From Surfer X'. Surfer X is a former pro surfer who does extensive research into the strategy that has become Fantasy Surfer. Each event, he'll share certain information that you may find useful when selecting your team for the upcoming contest. In order to let him say whatever he likes, we have chosen to keep his identity a mystery.

Goofyfoots – Since 2005 goofys have only made it into the quarters 9 times, into the semis 4 times and none into the finals. Only 5 goofys have ever rang the Bell and the last goofy to ring the Bell was Occy in 1998. But both Bobby and Fred could be the exceptions as they are the lone goofys to make semis, Bobby in 08 and Fred in 09.

Be sure to check forecast as over the past 5 years the event has gone mobile to Phillip Island, Johanna and Winkipop. All of which break differently than Bells and can affect your team’s overall performance.

Parko’s Bells track record since his 1st year on tour in 2001: 17th, 17th, 2nd, 1st, 9th, 2nd, 5th, 5th, 1st.

Hot Hand – Taj Burrow with 3 victories and a 2nd in the last 4 events he's entered. Look no further then Current #1. How will he come in as yellow jersey?

X Factor – Kelly won in 94, 97, 06 & 08 tied for most wins with MR. I'm sure he wants to break that record as well.

Jordy/Dane – 2010 judging criteria suits them but Bells proper doesn’t offer tons of ramps, if swell comes then the big canvas will allow these two artists to paint traditional masterpieces. If you selected them for cheap at start of year then a good idea is to keep them since their value has risen and will continue to do so.

Even though A.I. does post an impressive resume at Bells, he looked rusty at Snapper. If he was serious about this year’s tour, one would think he would have used either the big WQS events at Margarets or Tasmania to knock the rust off and tune up that competitive edge and take advantage of the new one world ranking like CJ & Taj have done.

On another hand Kelly didn’t go to W.A./Tazzy which could help his cause as the new one world ranking could cause burnout in some of the other guys if not careful.

Rookies – Rookies could struggle, as experience will play a factor at Bells. Owen Wright is probably the best bet and even though a goofy, scalped some big names including Dane & Kelly in 09. Rip Curl will make him very comfortable while in Torquay, which will help. A lot will depend on their draws but make no mistake they will have to go through top seeds to make it past round 3.

Power Surfers should do fairly well – Kekoa (5th in 09), Whits (9th in 09), Taylor (9th in 09), Kai (9th in 08 & 09) a poor man’s Occy, with record to prove it. Otts was sharp on the Goldie taking down Fanning.
